Moving into a university hostel in Nigeria is an exciting milestone — but stepping into a bare room with nothing but a metal bunk bed frame can be a rude awakening. If you don't pack smart, you'll waste your first two weeks spending emergency money on basic items at inflated campus market prices.
Whether you're packing for a federal university hostel like UNILAG, OAU, UNN, or UI, or moving into an off-campus private lodge, prices have shifted significantly in 2026. This is the practical, no-fluff checklist of everything you actually need.
1. Sleep & Comfort Essentials
Hostel mattresses are notorious for being thin or completely worn down. Your bed space is your only personal territory — prioritize making it comfortable.
- Mattress & waterproof cover: Most federal hostels require you to bring your own 3×6 student mattress. Add a zip-up waterproof cover to protect against dust, bugs, and spills.
- Bed sheets and pillowcases: Pack at least two sets. Stick to darker or patterned colours — white sheets turn brown within a week from hostel dust.
- Pillow: One standard fibre pillow is enough.
- Mosquito net: Malaria will ruin your grades. Bring a net and push-pins or rope to hang it over your bunk.
2. Cooking, Kitchenware & Food Storage
With the current cost of food in 2026, cooking your own meals is the only way to avoid going broke. Even if your hostel restricts heavy appliances, you need a basic kitchen setup.
- Gas cylinder or electric hotplate: Check your hostel rules first. Off-campus lodges usually allow a 3kg or 5kg gas cylinder. On-campus hostels may only permit a single-burner hotplate or camp gas.
- Pots and pans: Two small pots and one frying pan — you don't need a full catering set.
- Plates, cups, and cutlery: 2 plastic or break-resistant plates with lids, 2 bowls, 2 spoons, 2 forks, 1 kitchen knife, 1 sturdy mug, and 1 water bottle for lectures.
- Airtight food containers: Plastic buckets or containers with tight lids for raw rice, beans, garri, and elubo. Open nylon bags in a hostel room attract rats.
- Dishwashing items: Sponge, dishwashing liquid, and a small basin.
3. Bathroom, Laundry & Personal Hygiene
Hostel bathrooms are shared. You must be completely self-contained when walking down the hallway to shower.
- Plastic bucket and bowler: Essential for fetching water during morning rushes or scarcity periods.
- Shower caddy or bath bag: A plastic basket to carry your soap, sponge, toothbrush, toothpaste, and shampoo. Never leave toiletries in a shared bathroom.
- Towels: One large bath towel and one smaller face towel.
- Bathroom slippers: Never step into a shared campus bathroom barefoot. Rubber slides kept strictly for bathroom use.
- Laundry supplies: Large laundry bucket or bag, clothes pegs (guard yours — they vanish on hostel lines), bar soap, and detergent.
4. Power, Electronics & Study Tools
Unstable power supply is a reality on almost every Nigerian campus. Prepare for blackouts.
- High-capacity power bank: At least 20,000–40,000mAh from a trusted brand. It will save you when there is no power for three days during exam week.
- Rechargeable lamp and fan: A bright LED lamp for studying at night, and a small rechargeable desktop fan for the dry season heat.
- Extension cord: Hostel rooms usually have very few sockets for 8–12 roommates. A long extension cord lets you pull power directly to your bunk.
- Laptop and charger: Essential for assignments, CBT registrations, and online learning.
- Scientific calculator and stationery: Sort your calculators, notebook packs, and pens before classes begin.
5. Clothing & Footwear
Space is limited — don't bring your entire wardrobe. You will likely share one small wardrobe or locker with a roommate.
- Lecture wear: 5–7 simple, decent outfits. Respect your school's dress code to avoid being turned away at the lecture hall gate.
- Footwear: One pair of smart sneakers, one pair of formal shoes or sandals, and at least two pairs of casual slides for daily hostel movement.
- Hostel clothes: 4 sets of loose, comfortable clothes — shorts, singlets, joggers, or old t-shirts for lounging in the room.
- Rainy season gear: A compact umbrella and a lightweight jacket or hoodie for cold harmattan and rainy mornings.
6. First Aid & Sickness Prevention
The school clinic can be far and queues are long. Keep a small emergency pouch under your bed:
- Paracetamol / Panadol
- Antimalarial drugs (ACTs)
- Vitamin C and multivitamins
- Anti-diarrheal medication (Flagyl / Imodium)
- Inhaler if you are asthmatic
- Plasters, methylated spirit, and cotton wool
7. The Small Things Everyone Forgets
- Padlocks: Buy two or three sturdy padlocks with spare keys — one for your suitcase, one for your wardrobe locker.
- Hand sanitizer and pocket tissues: For long lecture hours when faculty restrooms lack water.
- Broom and dustpan: Keep your corner clean. If every roommate brings a cleaning tool, maintaining the room becomes much easier.
> Pro tip: Don't buy everything at once from your hometown if you're traveling far. Pack your clothes, electronics, and documents, then buy heavy items — mattress, plastic buckets, food containers — from markets near your university campus to save on transport costs.
